A proxy is a device or program that stands between two or more interconnected programs or devices. Reasons for a proxy include one or more connected parties only wanting the other to access specific data. A proxy provides a method for this.

a proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection or a web page available from a different server and the proxy server evaluates the request as a way to simplify and control its complexity.

Purpose

Many users worry about what kind of information can be traced back to them. Internet proxy servers can be used, as an intermediary so that the sites never directly connect to the host network. Some websites block certain Internet users by geography, so using a Web proxy located in the Web host's country will allow foreign users to use the website.
