Just to clarify, it's intentional that, for example, a reformatted VAT number for Switzerland will not include the MWST at the end, right?

I'm working on an answer. Is it critical that Austria match to AT despite being ATU, or is it okay to just change the function call to ATUVAT... (or alias)?
