~0u , at the very least, is necessary, to ensure it's unsigned . I did ~00u because 00 makes it octal, but according to posts below, it seems that ~0u is fine for C99 standard.

int_size() assumes the bit size of an int is the same as the bit size of unsigned . Certainly very common, but not required by the C spec.
