@MartinSand Because it's calling select() in that loop, which puts the thread to sleep until there is activity on a filedescriptor.

Oh, the last statement caught my attention. Let's put performance considerations aside for a moment, wouldn't the part start_listening() nearly exhaust a core (while true) if you didn't put it to sleep?
