Thanks for the answer! I edited the OP to add a link to a github repo with an updated version of todo(1). Indeed, the topological sort was unnecessary so I removed it. I'm not using hsearch(1) because OpenBSD's implementation seems to differ from Linux's in how the key element of ENTRY must be allocated (but I might be wrong).
