I knew about the bytes per sector field in the BIOS parameter block, i'm just reluctant to enlarge secBuff, my main data segment only has about 20,000 bytes to spare. DIV32 was a procedure that I wrote a while ago, I reused it here in this code. Your way is better. Basically every web site that I encountered while I was gathering information on the file system mentioned that the root directory size in sectors is always fixed with FAT12/16, so I thought I was making that calculation for no reason.
