There is no reason as to why I need to read a whole line of code. I simply thought it would be an interesting spin on the exercise instead of just reading a single character per iteration. If I'm not completely off-base here getchar and putchar only works on characters.

Why do you need to read whole line into the memory? Why not to use just getchar and putchar ?
