There's nothing wrong with a dumb question if it has an easy answer. That's how people learn. And sometimes the simplest of questions unlock key concepts for the learner to have a breakthrough.

I also agree with the large body of SO users who think downvotes should be accompanied with a polite explanation of what needs improving: http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/135/encouraging-people-to-explain-downvotes Doing so makes the entire site better and is in the intent of the system.
